MS Sufferer David Heald Achieves Dream Job in the Fitness Industry
An MS sufferer is on his way to achieving his dream job, thanks to qualifying as a fitness instructor on a new government funded training programme.
David Heald, from Warrington, left his job as a customer service engineer in October 2007 due to his illness - his previous role involved extensive driving and the symptoms of tiredness and numbness left him no choice but to leave for the benefit of himself and the company. After rekindling his love of martial arts, David discovered the benefits exercise had on his MS and now follows a fitness regime.
The 28-year-old's passion for exercise inspired him to find a job in the thriving fitness industry. In four weeks, he completed an industry recognised qualification at the Lifetime Fitness Academy in Manchester and has since earned himself a voluntary role at Alive & Well health and fitness centre. David also has a job interview lined up for a paid role where he will complete his NVQ, a work-based award highly valued by the best fitness employers.
David says "At first, I was apprehensive of doing the course but I really surprised myself. The course was brilliant and the tutors were very helpful and accommodating. Without the tutors, I would not have done as well as I did and definitely would not have enjoyed doing the course if they were any different. I have gained so much confidence and knowledge which will now enable me to help other people achieve their goals. I hope to become a physiotherapist in the future and this course has provided the boost I need."
The Lifetime Fitness Academy offers government funded programmes in fitness instructing and personal training, which are designed to meet the needs of both employers and employees. Lifetime's Fitness Instructor programme offers an entry level qualification into the fitness industry and modules include exercise and fitness knowledge, gym instructing, first aid, customer service, sports hall set up and interview skills.
