Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Exercise to Music)
NVQ Level: 2-
The Level 2 Exercise and Fitness Instructing NVQ is an essential part of the Instructing Exercise and Fitness Apprenticeship and is designed for any member of staff who is enthused by studio and group based exercise, loves music, has natural rhythm and a positive personality to motivate a class.
This qualification is ideal for those who want to develop their skills and work within a studio environment or for those who already teach classes in a leisure centre or gym and require a nationally recognised qualification.
You will learn how to choreograph and lead your own classes to cater for a diverse range of people, with varying levels of experience and ability, as well as motivate and support your clients to develop and maintain a regular class programme.Throughout the programme you will also gain additional skills such as dealing with accidents and emergencies which help to develop your portfolio of skills in a leisure environment.
The level 2 Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Exercise to Music) NVQ programme will give you access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), gives you 20 REPs CPD points and provide you with a firm skills base you that can be applied to other studio and group training sessions such as Lifetime’s suite of Les Mills programmes.

Framework Structure
Candidates will need to achieve the following three NVQ mandatory units:
- C22 Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
- C316 Work with clients to help them adhere to exercise and physical activity
- A335 Reflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activityAnd complete the following two NVQ optional units:
- D453 Plan and prepare group exercise to music
- D454 Instruct group exercise to musicFunded candidates will also complete the following:
- Key Skill Application of Number Level 1
- Key Skill Communication Level 1
- Certificate in Fitness Instructing Level 2 (Group Exercise to music)
- Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure and Learning Level 2
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills -
Programme Length
Apprenticeships typically take between 6-18 months to complete.
It may be necessary for candidates to do some off site training for this qualification.

Eligibility criteria
- Aged 16 or over
- Not degree/HND qualified
- Working in a fitness environment for 30 hours per week
