The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) is an independent public Register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health-enhancing exercise instructors in the UK.
One of their key functions is to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed national occupational standards.
To gain REPs recognition, fitness professionals must provide evidence that they have qualified through a REPs accredited course that meets the National Occupational Standards. These standards are produced by SkillActive, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure & Wellbeing, who represent the needs of the industry agreed by employers and other stakeholders.
Membership of REPs provides assurance and confidence to consumers, employers and the health professions that all registered exercise professionals are appropriately qualified and have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform specific roles.
REPs members are acknowledged for their:
All REPs members are bound by a Code of Ethical Conduct and need to hold appropriate public liability insurance.
Membership also allows for the transferability of skills throughout the UK, across participating countries in Europe and around the world.
In order to remain on the Register, members must continue to meet the standards that are set for their profession through Continual Professional Development (CPD).
"As a relatively young and dynamic industry there are lots of new and exciting developments in the world of fitness. Whether it’s studying how exercise can help ease and treat complex medical conditions, taking your career to the next level or simply becoming a better instructor, the Register of Exercise Professionals is passionate about continued professional development and life-long learning.
REPs also appreciates that investing in learning and qualifications can seem costly and time-intensive. So to ensure any course you take will not only be rewarding and enriching, but also useful and relevant to your career, REPs would always advise making sure it is approved by SkillsActive (the sector skills council for the fitness industry) and therefore fits in with the REPs entry structure, or endorsed CPD carrying REPs CPD points. You can check whether your chosen course meets the agreed industry standards on the REPs training portal."
