Successful apprenticeship programme offers A level students an alternative to university
An influx of A Level students applying for fitness instructing courses is expected this month as thousands receive their exam results.
The fitness industry’s number one training provider Lifetime has already seen an increase in the number of individuals applying for government funded apprenticeships through its Centre of Excellence for Fitness. Many of these are young people who are turning to vocational training as an alternative to University.
Individuals who successfully qualify for the programme will achieve a Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification in up to three weeks or, for those who already have a Level 2 qualification, a Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification in two to five weeks depending on the option available to them. This is followed by the opportunity to start earning at a health club, leisure centre or hotel fitness facility to gain practical experience and complete an NVQ.
Around 75 per cent of students who completed the classroom-based aspect of the programme with Lifetime are now in the workplace.
“Apprenticeships are a great alternative to university for young people interested in health, fitness or sport,” says Ben Jones, Teaching and Curriculum Manager at Lifetime. “The Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification provides a first step on the ladder to a career in the fitness industry. Rapid progression into new roles is also possible for ambitious individuals and the Level 3 Personal trainer qualification is ideal.”
Training venues are located across England including London (Holborn and Southbank), Croydon, Chelmsford, Watford, Southampton, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Bristol, Teeside, Derby, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Staines and Portsmouth.
Lifetime was awarded the Centre of Excellence for Fitness for National Employers by the National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure – a government initiative set up to improve skills training in the sector.
Whilst many sectors are struggling in the downturn, the 2009 State of the UK Fitness Industry figures reveal a three per cent increase in the estimated market value of the industry. And with London hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games plus new government initiatives like Change4Life – which aims to get more people more active more often - continued growth is likely. This is great news for those looking to launch a career in fitness.
