About the employer
Plenty of folks ask me how come the whole world loves my chicken. I’m guessing they can’t have tried it, since they would already know the answer. It’s my delicious Original Recipe of eleven herbs and spices.
Now, I understand this isn’t enough information for the more detail-minded among you. So I’d be delighted to share with you the whole, incredible story of Kentucky Fried Chicken, if you’d care to hear it.
Some might say I was a slow starter.
I first cooked chicken at the age of six years old, standing barefoot in my Mamma’s kitchen.
Back then, I was plain Harland Sanders and my Daddy had just passed away. Everyone needed to lend a hand to get by.
These were tough times, but they taught me one important lesson for life (besides how to cook chicken!). Never ever give up.
I tried everything to make my way. I joined the army. I was a fireman on the railroad. I piloted a ferry boat on the Ohio River. I even tried my hand at lawyering for a while. But nothing seemed to stick.
So it happened that I went back to what I knew best. Cooking chicken. In 1930, I set up in a little stopover on the highway, making meals for hungry drivers. It was the height of the Great Depression, but we were always busy.
Before too long, I was close to perfecting my world famous Original Recipe, and, boy, did they love that chicken!
I’d watch ’em eat every last morsel and then lick their fingers clean for good measure. That’s when ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’ was born. I knew there and then I had created something truly special. In 1935, the State of Kentucky saw fit to make me a Colonel, the highest honour it can bestow on a person for service to the community. I was recommissioned in 1950, and it was about this time I began to wear my white suit and black string tie, so’s folks knew who I was by sight. I’ve worn it ever since.
Then in 1952, I struck upon the idea of setting up a little franchise to share my chicken with hungry people outside of Kentucky. The first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise opened that same year in Salt Lake City, Utah.
It was like lighting the fuse on a firework. Before long, KFC restaurants were popping up all over the United States.
My chicken got so popular, I decided to introduce a means for a whole hungry family to share a KFC together at the same time. We called it the ‘Bucket’ and it’s been shared around the world ever since.
It wasn’t too long after that we embarked on our biggest adventure yet, taking Kentucky Fried Chicken across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom. We set up our first restaurant outside of North America in sunny Preston, way, way back in 1965 (before all those other guys arrived!).
We’ve never looked back. Today, you can enjoy KFC in 118 different countries worldwide, from Sweden to South Africa and China to Brazil.
And the Colonel will always be there to greet you.
