What are higher apprenticeships?

Higher apprenticeships allow learners to train for job roles that demand highly specialised skill sets. They allow learners to gain these advanced vocational skills, experience and an industry recognised qualification through workplace training and blended learning.

Offered across a range of industries, higher apprenticeships refer to any apprenticeship between levels 4-7 (apprenticeships range from Level 2 to 7). Level 6 and 7 are commonly known as “degree apprenticeships''. In terms of comparison, Level 6 is considered equal to a bachelor's degree, with level 7 being equal to a Master's degree.

How do higher apprenticeships work?

Like most apprenticeship programmes, the learner will develop competencies and skills while working in their specific field and studying alongside their job role. Delivery of the apprenticeship will be dependent on the apprenticeship provider and the needs of the employer.

Apprenticeship standards define the exact skills and competencies the learner should display upon assessment. These are defined by groups of employers in industry collectives known as “trailblazer groups”. A higher apprenticeship can last up to five years, but this depends on a number of factors such as the industry, and whether the learner is undertaking the apprenticeship on a full or part-time basis.

What are the higher apprenticeship entry requirements?

The entry requirements for higher apprenticeships vary from sector to sector and the role. Learners will need to be 16 years old or above and do not need any formal qualifications. For some higher programmes, employers may ask for GCSEs (level 4+) in English, maths
