Apprenticeship levy update

According to government spokespeople and the Skills Minister himself we can be in no doubt that the Conservative Party is committed to investing in training and continuing with the planned apprenticeship reforms.

At a recent conference, Nick Boles commented that all lead candidates were supportive of the planned apprenticeship reforms. He went on to say that it would be “inconceivable” that a reformed Conservative government this October would dilute its commitment to apprenticeships “in any respect.”

In fact, with regards to Brexit and the vote on the EU he stated, in what some might say was the quote of the hour, “the need to invest in skills development and in boosting productivity is even more urgent and important for a UK outside of the EU than inside.” It of course stands to reason that an independent trading nation would indeed require talented, skilled workers and a training and development skills policy to suit. And if we, as part of the training industry were still concerned, he added that training is “absolutely vital”.

We can be left in little doubt that current apprenticeship reform plans will go ahead, perhaps with minor tweaks, with the apprenticeship levy implementation going ahead in April 2017 as planned. That just leaves the latest apprenticeship levy policy details announcement, which was due to be announced in June. There will be a delay, but the one certainty we are working to currently is that we will have an update before Parliament’s summer recess on 21st July.

Lifetime Training is committed to keeping employers up-to-date on the apprenticeship levy roll out and will post the next update (due before 21st July 2016) as soon as there is more information to share.

Enjoy cash-free apprenticeship programmes until 5th April 2017. There is zero tax to pay for any apprentices who are enrolled before this date so it makes sense to review your existing training and development requirements now and sign up your new and existing staff onto role and developmental relevant programmes.
