How Long does it Take to Become a Personal Trainer?

Main Image

One of the biggest misconceptions amongst those considering joining the fitness industry as a personal trainer is that it’s a position you can occupy without training. After all, what could you possibly need to learn to become a personal trainer? If you’re into your fitness, isn’t that enough?

The answer, of course, is no. As a personal trainer, you’ve got the continued health and fitness of another person in your hands. It’s a huge responsibility, and one that you shouldn’t take on without the knowledge that you’ve got the requisite skillset to handle it.

So, just how long does it take to train as a personal trainer?

If you’re going to work for a gym, the vast majority are going to demand – at the very least – certification for the exercises that you teach. That means passing a qualifying exam, although these can be taken in as little as a week. Unfortunately, many British gyms require more significant training qualifications.

At Lifetime Training we’re proud to offer personal training certification and help aspiring trainers like you become effective and successful members of the fitness industry. Here are our two most popular options:

Fitness Instructor Certificate

Time required to complete: 1-3 months

If you’re interested in taking the first steps into the fitness industry, the fitness instructor certificate is the ideal place to start. A blend of classroom and online study, you’ll be supported by expert trainers throughout.

Costing just £799, once completed, Lifetime Fitness will help you in seeking employment opportunities at a number of affiliated leisure facilities, including gyms, leisure centres and health clubs.

No prior qualifications are required and the course is structured as 4 classroom attendance days, a number of online lessons and a 1-day assessment day 3 to 4 weeks later.

Online, you’ll learn Anatomy and Physiology, the principles of exercise, fitness and health, health and safety in a fitness environment plus a great deal more.

In the classroom, you’ll learn how to plan gym-based exercise and instruct gym-based exercise, in-class lessons can be taken in any of the dozens of teaching locations we offer up and down the country.

Level 3 Personal Training Diploma

Time required to complete: 3-12 months

Required in order to become a fully qualified personal trainer, the Level 3 Personal Training Diploma brings together classroom and online learning with expert trainers. Even bett>A selection of different courses and study methods are available, making it perfect for those already in work or with specific time demands in their life. Each of the courses, however, will provide you with the knowledge and skills required to become an effective personal trainer.

Part time, online only and diplomas for current personal trainers are all available, but it’s the Advanced Personal Training Diploma that catches the eye. This part time course qualifies you to work with a broader range of clients, including the elderly and pre and post-natal clients on a group or individual basis.
