Crook Log Leisure Centre apprenticeship success story: Matthew Bratton

I used to be an Apprentice Fitness Instructor which I began in September 2017 and recently qualified my Level 2 Fitness Instructor. I am now a full time Fitness Instructor 1 year later.

I first came across the role on a website and wanted a job I would enjoy. I love fitness and also helping people to reach what they want in life.

I remember my first day being very nervous as I wondered if I would get a nice or a scary boss! Luckily I got a nice boss though she can be scary at times! I wanted people to like me and wanted to impress everyone. I remember getting introduced to my colleagues and they were so welcoming and helpful and now they are like my second family. I thank them so much for teaching me and increasing my knowledge.

My first job was to clean the equipment. It doesn’t sound glamorous but I am thankful for it as customers started talking to me as I was going around the gym and some have now become good friends.

My role also helped me develop new skills as I was really shy. It is hard to believe as I look at myself now. Both staff and customers made me feel welcome and accepted me and helped make me into the confident person I am now. I have learnt not only how to improve my fitness but also help others with more challenging conditions.

My next step is to get my Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification. Hopefully after this step move more into rehabilitation. I want to broaden my knowledge and help a wider scale of customers to help them on the road to recovery and see them achieve their goals. It makes me happy seeing people succeed with my help and dedication.

My current role involves ensuring customers know how to use the machines correctly and safely, keeping machines cleaned and maintained and helping customers reach their personal training goals.

I would highly recommend the Fitness Instructor apprenticeship to anyone who has a passion for fitness and loves helping people. The gym staff and customers have also made my job enjoyable and I have learnt many new skills.

I would like to say a big thank you to all staff and customers for making me feel so welcome and at home and making my whole experience special and enjoyable.
