Meet Iceland Apprentice, Jade Fuller

How long have you been working at Iceland and why did you start?
8 years ago I was working in a call centre and didn’t see any progression available. I applied for Iceland just as a part time job but ended up falling in love with retail and the way Iceland is, and decided I’d found my new career so quit my other job.

What apprenticeship are you studying?
I have completed the level 4 Retail Manager course with Lifetime. I passed my exam first tine and achieved a distinction first time in both my professional discussion and business project

Have you completed any apprenticeships or training courses before?
This was my first apprenticeship I have completed. I wanted to become a store manager and the apprenticeship had just started so I was the first manager on my area to start the apprenticeship.

What are you most looking forward to about the apprenticeship/training/completing?
When I started the course I think I was really excited to gain more knowledge and experience. The fact that you get a qualification as well I think was a great motivator.

What has surprised you most about the apprenticeship so far?
When I started the apprenticeship I didn’t realise the depth in which the apprenticeship would cover, I’ve learnt so much about retail and management and different theories and modules on different topics. It’s really helped to progress my abilities

What have you enjoyed? (Progression? Responsibility? Fuse?)
I really enjoyed the apprenticeship as a whole, it is hard work and you do have to put in the time and energy but you get so much out of it. Even though I was extremely nervous I really thrived off completing my end point assessment. Being able to showcase your learnings and present a business case was really fun.

How will it help you get on in work and with your professional development?
The apprenticeship has helped me massively with my career in Iceland. During the course I was given my own store to run, the store I actually started In. I have used so much of my learnings and some of the management techniques to enable me to be the best manager I can be.

What do you enjoy most about working at Iceland?
Iceland is such a great place to work, from the moment I started I liked the fact it feels like a family business, everyone knows each other, even the area and regional managers know your name as a cashier. I also like the fact that we’re a company that cares about sustainability and charity. Mainly though I like the challenge, running my own store and progressions people makes me really proud to say I work for Iceland. No two days are the same, but that’s what makes it better.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship route over others?
I wanted to progress to a store manager so my area manager spoke to me about the new apprenticeship for store managers and put me forward to be assessed. Being the first manager on my area to pass the apprenticeship feels like a great achievement in my life.

What’s the best thing you have learned and how has this helped you in your job role?
The course goes through so many different modules which are so helpful in the job role. Management and leadership is a really big one for me as you have to change the style and way you work with people as the store manager. Getting various techniques and learning about staff behaviour and motivators really helped me to develop my management style and ensure I get the best out of my team.
