This is an exciting opportunity to help the Charity deliver its wide range of Watersports activities. It is a varied role with the potential to develop a wide range of skills. You will work directly with the delivery team, coaching children and adults with additional needs.

At The Ahoy Centre you will work towards your Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship over the course of 12-18 Months.

You will be responsible for delivering Sailing, Rowing and Powerboat Training sessions to our beneficiaries on the Tidal River Thames.

You will receive the opportunity to gain a number of RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and BR (British Rowing) qualifications such as the Dingy Instructors, Powerboat Level 2, Safety Boat, First Aid and many more. You will be expected to be a positive role model for those who come through the centre.

To complete your apprenticeship qualification, you will work with a Lifetime Training Coach who will support you through your course work. Around 20% of your time on the apprenticeship will be dedicated to this.

You will be on a Community Activator Coach apprenticeship, which allows you to get a qualification and get paid to do it! Your qualification will be delivered by Lifetime Training, but you will be part of the Coach Core family- giving you access to loads of extra perks, including kit, training from partners such as UK Coaching and the chance to coach at local/regional sporting events

Future prospects

During the program, you will be able to take part in many training sessions. You will have the opportunity to become an RYA Sailing instructor, a qualified Rowing coach, and get your powerboat licence. There are many other training opportunities that happen through the apprenticeship!

We have had a number of apprentices who have continued to work at the centre as instructors after finishing.
Others who have completed have gone on to work for many of the operators on the Thames such as Thames Clippers, Cory’s Tugs and City Cruisers.

Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship L2 including Functional Skills in Maths and English

We are a charity that changes people’s lives and builds life skills through sailing, rowing, powerboating and other activities on and off the water.
We attract young people and adults from our local community working in partnership with schools, youth groups and other community organisations. Often our users are from marginalised groups who wouldn’t normally be able to access sailing, rowing or other water-based activities.
As well as having fun, our recipients often gain new skills and confidence that they can apply in other life settings. Sometimes the experiences people have at Ahoy can alter their life direction.
As a charity, we fund all the activity through fundraising, so that we can offer water sports either free or at a minimal cost. Our ability to form meaningful partnerships and with organisations who share our mission to improve the lives of people in Greenwich and Lewisham is crucial.
We are based on The River Thames in Deptford, south-east London. We sit on the border between the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham, and we are only a 15-minute walk from Deptford and Greenwich town centres.
In 2023 we were 20 years old.
You would be joining The Ahoy at an exciting time as we look towards 2025 with a fresh approach. You would have the opportunity to shape our future work.
