Sporting Memories is a charity and social enterprise that helps older people to reminisce, replay and reconnect through the power of sport and physical activity.
The Community Sport and Health Officer role is an Advanced Level Apprenticeship open to all and including those looking to return to work or to change careers. It is the perfect opportunity to understand the role of sport and physical activity in the Community, and as a coach with Sporting Memories you will be helping to run fully accessible and inclusive group sessions that are fun, physically and mentally stimulating and include games as well as sporting reminiscence.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting activities within a weekly Sporting Memories Club within the leisure centre including preparation and monitoring and evaluation reporting.
- Supporting Sporting Memories Club Members, volunteers and member referrals through their wellbeing journey.
- Connecting with referral partners and volunteering organisations in the Community.
- Facilitating inclusive seated physical activities and games in Leisure Centre.
- Facilitating inclusive activities in other settings (e.g. day centres and care homes).
- Education (Health & Safety, Safeguarding, Dementia awareness, Sporting Memories).
There will be a requirement to travel across Leeds on a regular basis, this could be by public transport as part of this role although a driving licence and own transport would be advantageous.
What your apprenticeship includes:
- A mixture of face to face and online catch ups every 4 - 6 weeks to discuss feedback and progress
- A mixture of on and off the job training, including workshops and webinars
- Reviews every 12 weeks with your Line Manager and apprenticeship Trainer
- The chance to get Functional Skills in English and maths (if you don’t already have GCSE)
- Working towards a level 3 Community Sport and Health Officer apprenticeship over the course of 12-18 months

Personal qualities
● Ideally some lived experience of working with or caring for older people, especially those living with long-term conditions
● Have at least two years of working in a responsible position or related field
● Confidence to travel independently and visit and engage with new organisations
● A good interest in and knowledge of some sports

Future prospects
Working with older frail people in Leisure centre supporting and in the wider community delivering outreach work or further training qualifications within the leisure sector or community sports development.
Or
Activity coordinator in a care home or lead to further training in the care sector.
