Meet Iceland apprentice, Yvonne Cole

How long have you been working at Iceland?
7 years.

What apprenticeship did you study?
Retail team leader level 3

How are you looking to use your apprenticeship going forward in your career?
The next stage is to progress to senior supervisor after gaining more experience. Eventually I would like to go into head office and work in store loss prevention.

What has surprised you most about the apprenticeship/ unexpected benefits?
I used to struggle with how to deal with under-performing staff. I now feel more confident in dealing with these situations from the apprenticeship, mainly around changing my own attitude and adapting communication to get the best out of them. I have already had a meeting with our stock loss prevention manager who has set me some goals to develop further! I did my apprenticeship project and presentation on stock loss; focusing on how to reduce stock loss and how to improve profit. This developed my own knowledge and I’ve been able to implement the changes and actions into 2 stores.

What have you enjoyed since completing the apprenticeship? (Progression? Responsibility?)
Since completing I have been promoted and moved to a bigger store where my manager had given me responsibility and developed me even further. I have been exposed to other parts of the business and been given more opportunities.

What do you enjoy most about working at Iceland?
Every day can be different, which is always challenging as well as having a great team to work with and help overcome the challenges.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship route over others?
It was an opportunity I was offered, and I wanted to take it. It was good to get the experience as well as learn.

What advice would you give to others starting the apprenticeship now, and what tips would you give around EPA?
For end point assessment I would recommend making bullet points for the power point and professional discussion. Also if you do forget something in your presentation you can cover it in your professional discussion. I would recommend doing your project on something you are passionate about and enjoy.
